Calvin Holland and Nolan Reszke were part of the BAISD Career Center team that earned 3rd place in the National competition in Atlanta Georgia. The team also placed 1st in the State and Regional competitions prior to earning the trip to Nationals.
Competition components
Project Drawing Analysis and Planning: Teams receive project drawings and special instructions at an orientation session. They must analyze these documents to develop an action plan and a timeline for completing the project.
Presentation: Each team presents their action plan to the judges, with all team members participating. The presentation is a key element of the scoring.
Construction: Teams apply their trade skills (carpentry, roofing, electrical, plumbing, masonry) to construct the project according to the building codes and project plan. Each team member must actively participate in the construction.
Knowledge Test: The competition includes a written test assessing general knowledge of the building trades. Competitors also need to take the SkillsUSA Professional Development Test.
Scoring: Judging is based on meeting the project timeline, jobsite safety and cleanliness, adherence to the project plan, completion of the project, quality of workmanship, presentation skills, and the knowledge test results.
The Career Center holds various fundraisers throughout the year to financially support the students competitions. Pinconning Schools are very proud of Calvin and Nolan's accomplishments. Calvin and Nolan have both joined the Carpenter's Union and were hired by Serenus Johnson of Bay City.
