My name is Stacy Kolka, a proud Pinconning Area High School graduate. I have been a member of the community since I was in 2nd grade at Linwood Elementary School. The first 15 years of my teaching career were with Standish Sterling Community School District and this fall I moved my employment back “home” to Pinny. I am thrilled to be a Spartan again and am looking forward to my first year as a 7th and 8th grade ELA teacher.
Where did you go to college, and your favorite class? I went to college at Saginaw Valley State University where I earned my elementary education degree with minors in English and Mathematics. My favorite course was a reading class within the College of Education where it was clear that even adults can enjoy being read to by an enthusiastic reader. This began my love of audiobooks and sparked my obsession with reading again.
When did you know you wanted to be an educator? I cannot recall a definitive moment when I was called to become a teacher. It was a gradual realization from being a Pinconning student in classrooms with quality educators. Mr. Peterson made 4th grade memorable with the expressive voices for characters while he read “The Hobbit” aloud. Mrs. Martin gave us the opportunity to record the play “The Secret Garden” in 6th grade. Mrs. Rabish and Mr. Calcetara made Science engaging. Mr. Martin made genuine connections with his middle and high school students. All of those amazing educators helped influence my decision to go into one of the most selfless yet rewarding careers out there.
What would your profession be if you were not a teacher? If I were not a teacher, I would be a makeup artist. It was my side job for about 5 years and I loved every moment of it.
What do you like to do in your free time? My favorite pastimes include being in my garden, reading or listening to books, playing softball or golf, and traveling with my husband and daughter.
What would we hear if we were riding with you in your car? I am one of those people who enjoys listening to all kinds of music genres. My playlists range from 2000’s pop, 90’s rap, hair bands, metal, alternative, new & old country, and obscure artists I’ve found on social media platforms.
What is your favorite season or Holiday and why? Fall is definitely my favorite season. When the hot, humid Michigan summer days give way to cool nights, changing leaves, bon fires, and sweater weather… It's simply cozy!
