Mrs. Ferguson’s second grade class at Pinconning Central Elementary started a creative and adventurous project in February called, “Hearts Across America.” The class goal was to receive cards and Valentines from all 50 states and countries across the world, and in turn, learn all about geography!
Mrs. Ferguson sent a note home to the parents of her class and shared the project on Facebook, and everyone across the United States came together! After a few days of spreading the word, a couple cards came in the mail, then later on the stacks of cards just kept growing! The students became enthralled, anxiously asking every day if more mail came in. The students were excited to get mail, and grateful for the people from all over the world that took their time to write letters, with some even taking time to write facts about their state! “Hearts Across America” became a project that taught local second graders about United States geography, the 50 states, and expanded even further to countries through Europe and Asia-a true educational feat.
Altogether, Mrs. Ferguson’s class received cards, pictures, magnets, calendars, pins, and flags from 45 states, and 13 countries, including: Canada, Ireland, Japan, China, Philippines, Switzerland, Guam, Belize, and Norway! To this day, Mrs. Ferguson’s class is still receiving mail, and will continue the project until the year concludes. Mrs. Ferguson is thankful for all who have taken the time to participate, and looks forward to continuing this project annually with her class.
